What Is the Isthmocele Problem? What Are Its Symptoms? How Is It Diagnosed?

Operations are performed at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital with the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Request an AppointmentCaesarean delivery is a life-saving method when it is performed for the right reasons. According to the statement made by the World Health Organization, caesarean delivery brings about a reduction of between 10% and 15% in the infant deaths seen during and after birth.
However, caesarean delivery can also cause certain complications. One of these is the caesarean scar defect known as isthmocele.
Isthmocele is associated with various gynaecological conditions. Although complications such as uterine rupture and ectopic caesarean scar pregnancy are extremely rare, isthmocele is a condition that is seen quite frequently in women who have had a caesarean section and that is difficult to diagnose. In addition, in women with an isthmocele the risk of complications in gynaecological procedures such as the insertion or removal of an intrauterine device or embryo transfer is also increased.
What Are the Symptoms of Isthmocele?
Diagnosis and Treatment of Isthmocele
The easiest method of diagnosing isthmocele is the use of imaging techniques. Isthmocele can be diagnosed with transvaginal ultrasound, saline infusion sonography, hysterosalpingography, hysteroscopy or MRI imaging. However, in order to obtain the best results, this imaging should be performed immediately after the end of the menstrual cycle, in the early proliferative phase.
The treatment methods vary according to the state of the condition. At this point, whether the patient wants to have children later is also taken into consideration. The definitive treatment of isthmocele is the surgical removal of that area. Today this operation is mostly performed laparoscopically or robotically. After the operation patients are discharged within as short a time as one day and return to their normal lives very quickly.
