Among gynaecological operations, oncological operations are demanding operations both because of their duration and because of their degree of difficulty. Oncological operations performed openly are operations that patients fear greatly because a large vertical incision is made, the patient loses a lot of blood, stays in hospital longer, recovers over a longer period and returns to daily life later.
When these oncological operations are performed laparoscopically, the very long duration of the operation, the fact that the laparoscopic instruments do not allow the surgeon to use their skill, and poor ergonomics are the disadvantages for the patient.
Today these operations are performed in a much shorter time and more ergonomically with robotic surgery. Among gynaecological cancers, uterine (endometrial) cancer is seen most often. The treatment of endometrial cancer is carried out very successfully with robotic surgery.
The patient is treated by removing the ovaries and the lymph nodes together with the uterus. Likewise, in the early stages of cervical cancer, whose frequency in women is steadily increasing, treatment is achieved with robotic surgery by removing the uterus together with its ligaments and part of the vagina.
Ovarian cancer may generally give no signs until the advanced stages and by the time the diagnosis is made the disease has progressed. Performing this long operation with robotic surgery ensures both that there is no large incision on the patient’s abdomen and that recovery is faster. Carrying out these operations, which require great skill and take a long time, with robotic surgery also means that the surgeon tires less and can concentrate more on the operation, keeping the margin of error to a minimum.
