Treating Myomas (Fibroids) With Robotic Surgery

Operations are performed at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital with the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Request an AppointmentRobotic myomectomy stands out as a surgical method performed to treat myomas (fibroids) that cause symptoms such as pelvic pressure, heavy menstrual bleeding and infertility. Thanks to robot-assisted surgery, the separation of the myomas from the adjacent surrounding tissue can be visualised better and at the same time the suturing of the uterus can be performed more easily and effectively.
In myomectomy performed with robotic surgery, less blood loss occurs than with open and closed surgical methods. Thanks to robotic surgery being preferred for many surgical procedures in recent years, both the operation itself and the period afterwards are more comfortable for patients. Thanks to the advantages provided by robotic surgery, operations proceed without problems.
How Is the Operation Performed?
This procedure is carried out by making four small incisions (smaller than 1 cm). First the patient is put to sleep under general anaesthesia. The incisions are then made, and the operation begins with the arms of the robot carrying the camera and the other instruments being placed inside the abdomen through these incisions. In robotic surgery, thanks to the camera with three-dimensional imaging and 16 times magnification, the borders of the myomas are clearly distinguished and healthy tissue is not damaged.
After the myomas are removed, they are divided into small pieces with a special device and taken out of the abdomen through the small incisions used by the robot arms. Thanks to this technique, even very large myomas can be removed without making large incisions in the abdominal wall. The doctor carries out this entire procedure via a console from which they control the robotic arms. Procedures performed with robotic surgery are more comfortable and trouble-free than open operations.
After the Operation
After the operation patients may need to stay in hospital for one day. However, depending on the patient’s general state of health, some patients may be discharged on the same day. The most important advantage of robotic surgery is that blood loss during the operation is low and that very little pain is felt after the operation. Because the incisions made in the abdominal wall are very small, they heal very quickly and patients recover much faster than after these major operations and are able to continue their lives from where they left off.
Another important advantage of the robotic myomectomy operation is that, because the robot arms can move in more directions than the human hand, it allows the area from which the myoma was removed to be closed much better. This greatly reduces the risk of uterine rupture in a subsequent pregnancy. In addition, because the operation is performed through an extremely small incision, the risk of postoperative complications such as infection is also quite low.
