Cancer is the condition that causes the most deaths in the world after heart disease. Gynaecological cancers stand out more among the other cancers. The rate of cancer-related deaths increases further with each passing year and it is thought that it will overtake heart disease in the coming years.

The advances taking place in technology and much of the medical research carried out are aimed at eliminating cancer. For this reason important developments occur in this field. Important successes are achieved in cancer treatment with the robotic surgical method, which has become increasingly widespread in recent years. Satisfying results are being seen thanks to robotic surgery, especially in gynaecological cancers. Important progress is achieved in cancer treatment in operations performed with the robot named da Vinci.

How Is Robotic Surgery Performed?

In gynaecological cancers, the robotic surgical method is in fact a technologically more advanced form of laparoscopy, which is commonly known among the public as closed surgery. Just as in the laparoscopic method, in this method too the procedure is carried out with the help of a camera through incisions smaller than 1 cm made in the patient’s abdominal cavity. The intervention is performed by entering through these incisions with the surgical instruments mounted on the robotic arms. The camera used in the robotic surgery method provides a three-dimensional image and therefore a very wide field of view is obtained. Thanks to the precise robotic arms, doctors can operate in smaller areas with almost no margin of error. In this way, the operation also becomes more comfortable for the patient.

Types of Cancer Treated

With the robotic surgical method, the surgical treatment of many gynaecological cancers can be performed, foremost among them cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer. Cervical cancer and ovarian cancer are among the 10 most common cancers in our country. In ovarian cancer in particular, the risk of death is quite high even if it has been diagnosed at its earliest stage. The first aim in the treatment of this cancer is to clear all tumours until none remains visible to the eye.

Thanks to the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System, tumours can be cleared easily through the tiny incisions made in the body. The rapid recovery process after the operation also affects patients positively from a psychological point of view and adds a great plus to cancer treatment in general.
